![]() The engine was moved forward over the front wheels compared with traditional automobiles of the time, and passengers were all moved forward so that rear seat passengers were seated within the wheelbase, rather than on top of the rear axle. Innovative weight distribution in the new Chrysler Airflow stemmed from the need for superior handling dynamics. Spring rates at the rear of traditional vehicles, which used leaf springs, were therefore necessarily higher, and passengers were subjected to a harsher ride. When loaded with passengers, the weight distribution tended to become further imbalanced, rising to 75% or more over the rear wheels, resulting in unsafe handling characteristics on slippery roads. Traditional automobiles of the day were the typical two-box design, with about 65% of the weight over the rear wheels. The car thus represented a breakthrough in lightweight-yet-strong construction, as well as increasing the power-to-drag ratio, since the lighter, more streamlined body allowed air to flow around it instead of being caught against upright forms such as radiator grilles, headlights and windshields. ![]() The strengthening was demonstrated in a publicity reel. Applying what they had learned about shape, the engineers also began looking into unibody construction to achieve rigidity with less weight than could be achieved with the conventional separate frame and body. Their engineers found that then-current two-box automobile design was so aerodynamically inefficient that it was actually more aerodynamic when tested as if being driven backwards. Chrysler built a wind tunnel at the Highland Park site, and tested at least 50 scale models by April 1930. ![]() ![]() The highly stylized dashboard of a '34 AirflowĬarl Breer, along with fellow Chrysler engineers Fred Zeder, and Owen Skelton, began a series of wind tunnel tests, with the cooperation of Orville Wright, to study which forms were the most efficient shape created by nature that could suit an automobile. In 2022, Chrysler announced that the Airflow name would be resurrected for an electric crossover SUV. Chrysler made a significant effort at a fundamental change in automotive design with the Chrysler Airflow, but it was ultimately a commercial failure due to a lack of market acceptance and controversial appearance.Ĭhrysler also marketed a companion model under the DeSoto brand, the DeSoto Airflow, and the appearance was also offered on the Chrysler Imperial. The Airflow was the first full-size American production car to use streamlining as a basis for building a sleeker automobile, one less susceptible to air resistance. The Chrysler Airflow is a full-size car produced by Chrysler from 1934 to 1937. ![]()

If future patches allowed a more open inventory system the crafting elements might really take off, opening up the game a ton. Common resources like grass and wood are everywhere, while more rare items will have to be farmed from animals and monsters. ![]() Food is plentiful but still has to be sought out often enough to remain a commodity. The survival aspect generally works well. ![]() Maybe with double that Windbound would open up a bit more but, as is, the player will struggle to even carry the bare essentials, making experimentation difficult. The rough limit on item carrying also includes any food, weapons or clothing that the player has crafted, adding further restrictions on the inventory and crafting system. Even with a boost, Kara can only carry around 10 items, making experimentation with crafting particularly annoying. Killing a single enemy can net as many as three separate items. Unfortunately, Kara has so few carry slots that crafting is more of a headache than it should be. Players are able to craft an array of weapons, items, and boat parts to help them undertake this journey. Sure, you may encounter different islands and creatures as the game continues but, essentially, Windbound remains the same once you’ve come to terms with it. Though the area to cover and explore gradually expands and contrasts over the course of the game, the fact that players have essentially seen what the game is (and will be) by the 20% mark is a little disconcerting. ![]() This cycle repeats five times, making up the central quest of the game. While there’s plenty of freedom in how you choose to undertake your quest, the basic premise remains the same: find three towers, scale them, then use their power to unlock a rune that allows you to complete the chapter. The series of islands that populate each chapter of Windbound are procedurally generated. However, it soon becomes clear that this archipelago is home to many strange and dangerous creatures, as well as the remnants of a lost civilization. From there, they will set out into the wild blue yonder in hopes of finding a solution to Kara’s predicament. When Kara is separated from her clan during a storm, it’s up to the player to help her survive her harsh new reality as a ship-wrecked castaway in unfamiliar territory.Īs the player explores their first island, they’ll find the means to craft and create a boat, a spear and a few other items that will help them to adapt to this world. Broken up into 5 chapters, Windbound sees the player taking on the mantle of Kara, a member of a clan of seafaring explorers. While the game looks great, and exploring is initially fun and exciting, Windbound quickly grows stale once you begin to realize the basic structure of the game. Sadly, this is where Windbound struggles. While the ambition to attempt such a task is admirable in and of itself, sticking the landing on such an endeavor is a bit of a challenge. If the notion of combining the above three genres sounds a bit intimidating, you’re not wrong. This is the balance that Windbound, a new rogue-like/survival/adventure game from Five Lives, attempts to strike. By starting the player off with very little in an incredibly daunting new world, rogue-likes encourage experimentation while also punishing brashness. ![]() ![]() So, now you know a little more about the world of denim obsessives. Jeans on display showing off fade and wear I can mention though that there is denim out there at 25 ounces, so there’s always a kid with a daddy bigger than yours. Regular high-street denim is more likely to be single-figure weight, and your usual premium raw denim likely to be 12 or 14 ounces. At this thickness you’re already running into problems making trousers from it, and it makes the process of hemming it difficult as well. The heavier it is, the stiffer and thicker it is, and 21 ounces is about as thick as it is practical to weave it. Shrinkage around waist and thighs will widen out again with use, but the length of the legs will only shrink, and up to an inch in many cases.Īnd then there is the 21 ounces. Another point of having the trousers intentionally on the long side is to allow for shrinkage. Where the edge is self-finished to avoid the unravelling of the fabric, this self-edge is often in contrasting stripes, and hence why you wear the trousers with a turn-up, to show it off. The selvedge, or more correctly self-edge, relates to how the edge of the fabric is finished. No pre-distressing here either, part of the game is that the wearers must wear the jeans and create their own wear patterns and fades in the colour, and hence make them unique and their own. Some of the denim will have been washed once, in cold water, to stabilise shrinking. There will be special, fiddly dyeing processes as well, and this is where the “raw” comes into it, as the denim has been dyed and then left untreated, which means a lot to how the colour will fade, as the jeans are worn.Īnd these fades are very much what it’s all about. The best (as in expensive and special) types of denim are made in small runs on vintage looms, to the exact specification of the often small artisan workshop sewing jeans from it. Why? The Japanese appear to be the most obsessive in their devotion to creating and recreating things, be it denim or vintage workwear. Now admittedly that last sentence may not make much sense to most people, but let’s break it down a bit and see what it means.ĭenim from Japan is considered by most enthusiasts to be the most desirable. Quite by chance really, as I wasn’t aware that I very much needed a new pair of special jeans until a friend pointed out to me that my life could be regarded as incomplete and unfulfilled without a pair of Japanese Iron Heart raw selvedge jeans in super-heavy-weight 21 oz denim. I recently had the opportunity to visit the new showroom of Rivet & Hide, a mainly internet retailer of rare and spectacular denim and other fine related articles. Which was a good vantage point into the odd ball world of high end denim. In recent years I’ve been wearing either Carhartt or Nudie jeans of various types, though last year I took the plunge and upgraded to a pair of more expensive Welsh jeans. And while I wouldn’t characterize myself as a denim nerd (we’ll hear more about these guys in a bit) I will profess a genuine interest in the topic and I do enjoy a really good pair of jeans. From the stonewashed jeans of the 80’s to the increasingly boringly styled and baggier jeans of middle-age, I’ve never been without a pair or two, even though other types of trousers have come and gone. Shop visit: Rivet & Hide, rare denim for puristsīeing of the age I am, denim has always been a part of my life, in some form or another. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Equus Oils is a massive horse-shaped building, the first of many oddities that the characters accept without question.
